Part of the problem

June 14, 2012

Open format Dj’s ruined it for big house dj names at bottle service clubs. I’m guilty of it too. I sold the fuck out. Back in 97′ when I first put a needle to the record I was a house purest. Progressive house to be exact; and not the progressive house classified by today’s top 100 mp3 download sites, but legit progressive house from back in the day. Back then most clubs were playing house music and Dj’s like Donald Glaude, Carl Cox, Dj Dan etc., where appreciated by the masses for the unique records they carried in their crates.

Somewhere there was a shift. Because I was such a house music snob, of course I blamed it on the influx of hip hop to the LA club scene; but whatever it was, club goers got scared of the new. They wanted to hear the same shit in the club that they listened to pulling into the club in their car just 10 minutes before. I talked to some other Dj’s about it back then. There were theories about 911 affecting people’s lack of open mindedness to new music but in reality, who the fuck knows. All I know is that I needed to survive.

By this time DJ AM was in his prime and the open format dj style began to thrive. Quick mixing and a genre crossing experience were expected if a dj was to keep a crowd. Money was the name of the game so I did what any self preservationist would do; I bought a Mac. I learned the art of mixing any style of music flawlessly with smooth bpm transitions and all. I spent time to figure out the most effective way to organize my serato libraries and I played “hits”. I joined the cult of Dj’s that trained the LA ear to expect the ordinary.

Now, when the big name, REAL house Dj’s come to these clubs, people don’t know what to do with the unfamiliar. It’s as if it’s their cue to stand around and just stare at each other and forge materialistic comparisons. Tonight I heard a dope Dj at Supperclub. He’s a well known producer signed to a respectable label. Dude was dropping bombs in the club. Epic tracks. No “good feelings” or “finding love in hopeless places” or “feeling so close to anyone” and certainly no being “sexy and knowing it”. Dude just dropped bangers. I watched the crowd and it looked like they’d been coated in a blanket of “derrrrr”. They didn’t get it. I felt bad for homeboy because he deserved props for what he was playing and how he was playing it. But trust, come the weekend, your favorite skam artist dj will come in and personify your car stereo for you and you can feel safe again.

Mad respect to the Dj’s still about the journey, who never take requests, and who stay true to their sound.

Night.

I’m feeling a bit hypocritical in that I just want to say “fuck haters”. Whats the point! We’re all connected to each other in one way or another. I get to see how shit talking and gossip has affected my friends lives in the most adverse ways. I’ve been the target of  the assumption mill as well and it doesn’t feel so amazing.  Aren’t we all imperfect? Aren’t we all going through struggles? Don’t we all suffer from character flaws that manifest themselves in different ways?  Who are we to judge anyone? Isn’t judgement a form of alienation, born from the ego thats so self destructive anyways?  I’m not perfect just like anyone else, however, I’ve learned through (sometimes harsh) self honesty that embracing the people around me no matter what, is the most positive way I can live my life. It feels the best. It allows me to help others which, in all simplicity, is my sole purpose on this earth.  If you hear something negative about someone you know, have the courage to ask that person yourself what the deal is. Maybe that person is struggling in an area that you can help with. Who knows, maybe that conversation will allow you the opportunity to be of service to your fellows rather than spite them from afar.

Ok…..enough with the bullshit

Career news….

djmichaelis.com is almost ready!!!!! I’m really stoked about that. I have a good team of people behind me now that are making things happen. My logo has been redesigned, my bio is being rewritten, and all of my social media crap is finally going to be consolidated to one spot…..YAY!

I’m starting a Sunday Residency at Bagatelle’s Sunday French Brunch. That spot is off the hook. A mix between a high end brunch, mixed with bottle service, sparklers, positive music, getting trashed, and dancing on tables….

My headlining experience at Supperclub June 2nd was off the hook. I’ll be back there June 23rd and 30th as well.  I’ll be back headlining in August.

I should be back headlining at Confidential in the end of July as well….We do it right over there!

I’m making my debut appearance at PlayHouse June 21st playing with “The GoshFather”

I’ll also be making my debut appearance at BNG’s new spot LURE along with the upscale and sexy restaurant/club Lexington Social House and Roxbury in July.

As always, you can catch me every Friday night at Sidebar in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel across from Wolfgang Puck’s world renowned steakhouse CUT.

I’m also in the process of raising money to build a studio so I can finish up my first full length album with bias24.

So much going on…….

Im on my way up, and I don’t have time to fuck with the petty shit so LOVE is the word of the day and every day

Peace

Just finished and posted a new mix on my podcast :djmichaelis@podomatic.com Check it out

Been busy lately. Bias24 and I just finished a 4 song remix ep for Kaya Jones which is due for release in the next. Included will be the remix, the extended play, the dutch refix (hopefuly) and a brain smashing dubstep remix UNAFKTD style. Really looking forward to getting our sound out there for you.

I just got back from playing a box.net event in San Francisco with Third Eye Blind. They were fun to watch. The singer graced the stage barefoot and talked to the ladies in the crowd with a sense of entitled arrogance. Gave me a little laugh.

I returned home late Thursday night completely exhausted. Friday I played my usual set at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. That spot cracks me up. I’ve never seen so many Bentley’s, Rolls’, or Lambo’s in one driveway; pretty ridiculous. Lots of rich dudes, high priced women and a tranny. Just keepin’ it real.

Saturday day I was off and running early, getting ready for Supperclub that evening. It was off the hook as usual and I got to share the tables with DJ Reflex. I spun the dinner set as well which was themed prom night. I played all those nostalgic 80’s jams I grew up with, making people smile. I never did get that slow dance though….you know who you are…..

Sunday I spun a lil’ somthin’ somethin’ at the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica. That place is rad. My bell Hop guy also happened to be friends with these people that specialize in the acquisition and restoration of old Chevy’s. Definitely got that dudes number so I can get the hook up on that 59′ El Camino I’ve been dreaming about.

Tomorrow Bias24 and I are going to start on a remix for Fitz and the Tantrums…. Should be completed by early next week and then onto Halos.

I’m actually falling asleep at my computer right now…..pretty awesome… Imma continue the story tomorrow…

Night all

Nice teeth…..who’s your dentist?

It’s Monday morning…..

Crazy weekend for me. Did myself a lil sidebar action. Interesting crowd as usual. Music was neat. The staff is awesome.

Worked on Kaya Jone’s new single “Boyfriend”. The original has a real swing beat pop feel to it and bias24 and I gave it some UNAFKTD love. Its transforming itself into a anthem style progressive house track with a tempo change dubstep outro. I got to hear some of it on a big system this weekend and it HITS! Can’t wait for the release!

I had a lil’ party at my house this weekend. It was crazy… 2 bands, 1/6 of Fishbone, Dj MICHAELIS, BIAS24, lots of alcohol n’ stuff, strippers, girl on girl makeout sessions in a coffin, girls on the pole, putt putt golf, hot tubbin’, sharpie pen art on drunk passed out people, fireworks, tattoo’n, body odor, orgies (nate and friends), and last but not least….Jihad (our dog) eating a hot dog out of a drunk, unconscious guy’s ass which was also of course filled and covered with mustard and ketchup…… The LAPD finally showed up at 5am, not for the noise factor, but because they were concerned about the “ketchup in the ass” guy getting hypothermia from being in the front yard on a couch all night. This is how we do it in hollywood. I love my home, I love my friends.

Headin into the studio to work on the dubstep portion of Boyfriend. Also gearing up for Sidebar and Supperclub. This weekend is gonna rock. Check out my twitter for the pics of this past weekend’s madness.

Have a beautiful week my friends

Thursday and getting ready…

September 1, 2011

I have a pretty busy weekend up ahead of me that i’m really excited about….

Starts off with spinning at SideBar in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel…I always like playing this spot because the vibe is kinda chill and kinda not, but it gives me the freedom to challenge myself and play things that are new or unfamiliar. It’s just 4 hours of putting musical puzzle pieces together in the smoothest way possible.

Saturday night I’m playing Supperclub Los Angeles….If you read my blog you already know how I feel about that joint. I’m playing with Carlo Astuti. Seems like a good dude….but I’ll let you know Monday hahah. I can’t wait to destroy that place….

As soon as I finish destroying Supperclub I’m jumpin’ in the Jag to head up to San Francisco. I’m playing in SF Sunday evening from 11pm-4am. It’s gonna be off the hook. Imma get video of this whole weekend and post it on Monday.

On a production end, I’m working on a remix for Kaya Jones, Halos, Megadeth and more…

See you soon

Oh Yeah…..I actually gotta write somethin’

August 19, 2011

It’s been forever…..Lots of change in my business and personal life….

I got to spend some time with my boy this summer which was rad. He’s seriously the coolest kid I’ve ever met and I’m so proud of everything about him. Each moment with him was pure joy and saying good bye and sending him back to his mom was truly heartbreaking….yet motivating. I love my art, and so much of my drive for success in it is inspired by wanting to spend more time with my boy and having the means to do so…. So there’s a lil introspection on the personal life of me.

On a business standpoint, opportunities are coming at me from all directions. I finished up that 311 remix with my boy bias24. It came out sick. Nick was super stoked about it and we got invited to go to their show this Sunday, August 21st, in Santa Barbara. I’m also working on remixes for Kaya Jones and Halo as well… thinking about a high energy club banger for Kaya’s hit single “boyfriend” and a moody dubstep vibe for Halos’ “Hekla”. Last night I got a call from Josh Villalta, the drummer from 36 mafia, saying Dj Paul from 36 wants to meet up to discuss workin’ on a track. So there I was sittin’ in my office on sunset blvd and doheny, across from Paul, thinkin’ “is this really my life today”. Its UNREAL. I never fathomed doing the things I’m doing. And I owe it all to getting out of my own way and tapping into something other than my own, limited, human power; to saying yes to opportunity no matter what I think or feel about it; to putting my best foot forward; and to being open in life to anything. My life is never a bore…

And….I’m moving into a house with a bunch of other musicians, producers, writers, and tattoo artists. They bought out all the properties around their house so we can make noise all day and night. Jacuzzi in the front yard, Putt Putt golf course round the property, tattoos on the second floor and more… Kinda dreamy right?

So its all happening. And I am grateful. As soon as I can post these remixes I will…..Hope you’re day is beautiful….Until next time…..

Monday morning my friends

July 25, 2011

Which means that I survived last week….still here. My life is the best kind of hectic ever. So stoked for every moment of it.

Last week i dj’d thursday at Falcon. The concept was cool, and the venue is pretty, but next time we have to bring in some extra sound. That spot needs some thump.

The Beverly Wilshire was fun. I’m always amazed when I can drop NWA and Dubstep at a super upscale “family” hotel in Beverly Hills, and when Dr. Dre’s “Let’s get high” dropped, the whole bar was singin’ along with that shit. There were of course those two drunk women who were asking for “it’s raining men”….that asked for Gaga 8 times in a row and had to make sure I knew that they have met Lady Gaga….and that would give me the “next song” hand gesture as soon as I would drop a track…. I tried to get a picture of these two gems for you to see em’ but it was a fail. Sometimes I think a taser should be a part of a dj’s travel equipment. I’m not much of a “complain about people”

type of dude…..but tasing some would be cool.

Supper Club Saturday Night was EEEEEppppppiiiccccc….. I LOVE THAT PLACE! I love EVERYONE who works there. I walk into that place and I feel like home and I’m with my family. I had an awesome set there and I really believe that when I walk into that place, I’m filled with so much love that it actually comes out in how I play. When I got there I was exhausted….Like REALLY exhausted. Hadn’t slept really all week between work, studio, and djing. But as soon as I stepped up to the decks it was like a whole new me emerged. I was filled with LIFE. It was just one more reminder that this IS what I’m supposed to be doing. I love music. I got to talk shit with DJ Reflex after the show. I like that dude a lot . Got some pics on my twitter from that night you should check. My homies from Hyper Crush came out to support. Love them. I dropped their track “Fingers Up” and that song got a GREAT response. People were stoked and the crowd really connected to it. Le Panda got some amazing pics of the night that I’ll post here.

Now its Monday and tonight back in the studio to work on this 311 remix. The track is mostly laid out not. Nick Hexum describes it as “sick”. Hope you like it. I’m pretty stoked on it.

If you “like” my facebook fan page, you’ll have first access to this remix and other mixes of mine:

Anyways…..love you all…. Enjoy the pics….Talk soon

Stay tuned for upcoming “Beverly Kills” dates… gonna be so fetch

It’s Friday

And……I GET to relax for a moment before the madness that I love so much washes over this weekend. This is one of those rare moments for me when I get to sit on the couch and wait for my love to come home. I’ve been downloading some new tunes for this weekend’s fun.  Tomorrow night I headline this Fundraiser for the Sober Community @ Fais Do-Do and I was thinking about opening it up with some skull crushing, bass pulsing dubstep…..but maybe I should work my way into that. I’ll feel it out as I usually do.  I’m looking forward to heading up north to the Outside Lands Festival with my love! My artist picks for that weekend are:

It should be amazing! As far as life for me….. Things are moving along…..The drive to succeed has never been so great within me and I feel so much love and support from the people around me. I am so grateful for that. I am so grateful for you. Never have I felt so blessed as I do now and they just keep coming!  I hope you all have a beautiful weekend. Be safe and loving…..

Here’s a lil something for your eardrum:

Powerful…..

August 5, 2010

I’m not a religious man, but I believe in something….. I read somewhere tonight that it is suggested that I believe in a Spirit in the Universe that knows neither time nor limitation….

As I read this I had a realization…..

That thing I believe in, that takes care of me, that loves me, that is within me, knows no limitation for me or concept of time. This simply means that any limitations I perceive are of my own making, but the reality is that my potential is beyond my conception; that there are no time frames, deadlines, or expectations in the grand scheme of things. I believe this applies to everyone. This means that ANYTHING is possible. All i need to do is put one foot in front of the other following my dreams, and be of maximum service to my fellows…….

Have a beautiful day.
